I love it when teens take on the status quo. I love it when they ask the big questions. So I was so delighted when I read about Gaby Rodriguez, who pretended to be pregnant at high school to gauge the reactions of her classmates and their behavior towards her and her boyfriend.
This is a girl who knows not only how to attack the issues in her community, but also how to sell herself and get her career as a writer and cultural commentator started. She has a book out from Simon & Schuster as we speak.
It just goes to show, that when teens have their eyes opened, they can see pretty far, and are not afraid to report what they find. For examining the prejudice and bitchiness of high school towards not only pregnant teens, but also Latinas, Gaby, you are TERRIFIC.
Yes, I heard about this story on the news. Brave, clever and eye-opening.
I think she has received some criticism for this project, for deceiving people and maybe for grandstanding. I’m actually more impressed by her obvious ambition and understanding of the media and what it takes to get a book deal. The project itself is not earth shattering, it’s good, but what she has spun it into shows her sophistication. Good for her.
